ADDING MULTIMEDIA Online School of Design, Sessions, Launches First Global Online Community
In an industry-leading move, Sessions, online school of design, has developed the first social and professional networking community for students of design, DesignSessions Community © http://students.sessions.edu/
Recognizing that design work benefits from collaboration and peer interaction, Sessions has built a unique resource that promotes online networking, peer reviews, discussion groups, and clubs that promise to substantially enrich the student experience and build relationships that spill into students’ professional lives.
The community is designed similar to popular social communities like MySpace and Friendster but with specific focus on resources that encourage burgeoning designers.
Users create a profile that establishes learning and professional design goals; membership includes a portfolio upload area where students can store an unlimited amount of their work for constructive feedback from their peers; and the site regularly publishes interviews with industry leaders conducted by Sessions faculty. The membership is not limited to students enrolled in Sessions. All students who have an interest in design may apply for membership, which is free.
Sessions offers certificate programs and courses in graphic design, web design, multimedia, business marketing design and digital arts. Founded in 1997, Sessions has spearheaded numerous academic excellence initiatives that are “firsts” in online education.
“To be truly successful, an educational environment requires a high level of human interaction. Although this is also true for online education, it has been an area largely overlooked by the industry,” stated Doris Granatowski, Sessions CEO. “We have built a true community, a special place that all students of design, faculty, and staff can meet individually or collectively in a warm and mentoring environment to connect, create, and critique everything about their favorite passion, design.”
Response has been overwhelming and positive from the early members of the DesignSessions Community©.
“This is like MySpace for design geeks,” commented one student. “I feel I’ve just discovered an online campus, student lounge, professional network, and source of friends and future associates all in one place.”
“DesignSessions Community© is bridging the gap between online and traditional on-ground art or design school education,” stated Michael Hamm, a Master Faculty member and frequent participant in the online community. “This has always included putting your work up on the board and having it critiqued by the instructor and often the entire class. The exercise of critiquing taught us all to see as designers, and having your work up there before your peers built a tough skin and prepared you to go out there in the industry and compete for clients. This also built strong camaraderie between student designers. It’s great to see all this happening within the DesignSessions Community.”
