For Those Who Are Wondering Does Bleach Kill Mold, Here Is The Answer Robin Murray The idea that mold might be growing in different locations in your home may make you upset and angry. In bathrooms, around the sink and tub, are common places to find mold, but more serious mold problems occur out of site in many home's walls and other framed in and finished areas. The mold that grows in these areas are not only cause for concern to the home's structural integrity, it is also a health problem many times for the people living there. When mold is found in one's home it is usual and common to reach for the bleach bottle to try and kill the mold and stop it's spread. However, does bleach kill mold or just slow it down? There are various opinions on this. Common Belief The advice given out most often is that bleach does kill mold, but that is usually wrong. What bleach usually does is clean the bleach up a bit and change the surface color only. One reason that this happens is that bleach is not concentrated enough to handle this project. Chlorine Dissipates One of the other reason that bleach is not effective at killing the mold and it's spores is because the chlorine in the plastic bottles actually escapes and dissipates through the container walls over time. From the time that it is put in the plastic bottles in the factory, being stored and transported to the warehouses, stores, eventually your home and then sitting on a shelf there, it loses up to fifty percent of the chlorine even if the bottles have never been opened. Penetration And, finally, the ion structure of bleach does not permit it to penetrate into dry wall, wood and other porous construction materials. Mold has roots that grow down into the material, just like vegetables in a garden grow down into the soil, which the bleach supposedly can't penetrate.
