Kenshin Oshima MBA Scholarship and Prize Established at NYU Stern

By: Reference and Education News

NYU Stern today announced that Kenshin Oshima has given a $2.4 million gift to the School to establish the Kenshin Oshima Scholarship for the most promising incoming MBA students with a deep and abiding interest in Asian culture. Mr. Oshima has also created the Kenshin Oshima Prize, a financial award to be presented to the student with the highest GPA at graduation. The recipients of the scholarships and prize will receive a combined total of $150,000 USD each year. The scholarship and prize were formally announced at an NYU Stern event on Monday in Tokyo.

Kenshin Oshima, the father of NYU Stern alumnus Yoshihito Oshima (MBA ’04), awarded the scholarship to two MBA students this year. (Joe) Sz-Mong Fan and (Lucy) Wei Ye will each receive scholarships for their first year of studies in the MBA program.

In his application, Fan wrote of his desire to please his mother, a single parent who had launched one of the few female-owned freight-forwarding companies in Taipei. Ye discussed how her mother’s persistence has been a constant source of encouragement, noting her mother’s ability to overcome obstacles while studying on her own for a physician’s qualification. Both applications moved Mr. Oshima so much that he was unable to choose just one recipient and awarded a scholarship to both Fan and Ye.

“We are sincerely grateful for the tremendous generosity of Mr. Oshima,” said NYU Stern Dean Thomas F. Cooley. “Gifts such as these enable talented individuals to attend business school without incurring a financial burden.”

“My encounter with the U.S. goes back to 1969 when I traveled through the United States by hitchhiking,” said Mr. Oshima. “That was the time of Woodstock, and I stayed in New York City for a few months in Greenwich Village. I was passing by the NYU campus every day and was impressed by the school. After more than thirty years, my son, Yoshihito, decided to go to Stern. So it was a natural decision for me to choose NYU to set up a scholarship.”

Mr. Oshima’s decision to partner with the Stern School was affirmed after meeting NYU President John Sexton and Dean Cooley and learning about the School’s commitment to recruit the most promising students from a diverse array of backgrounds. With NYU Stern being in and of New York City, Mr. Oshima felt that the School would be the ideal partner to help him support students who are pursuing an MBA in an effort to lead more fruitful and prosperous lives in their home countries.

Kenshin Oshima is the founder and president of industrial loan company SFCG Co., Ltd., which is listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. He is also the chairman of T-Zone Holdings Inc., which is listed on JASDAQ. After graduating from Keio University, Mr. Oshima began his career at Mitsui & Co. Ltd. He founded SFCG (then Shohkoh Fund & Co. Ltd.) in 1978 and acquired T-Zone in 2002. The group of SFCG and T-Zone have approximately 20 companies in real estate, finance, sporting goods manufacturing, and system development. He is the author of the best-selling book, “A Billionaire’s Textbook.”
