St. Enoch Center Rehab Will Provide a Major Boost For Glasgow Retail

Gavin Gowans

The project meant to revitalize the heart of Glasgow is ambitious, and has started with construction at the St. Enoch Centre shopping complex.

Canadian owner and manager Ivanhoe Cambridge's £100 million transformation will add significantly to the city's public profile and provide a fabulous and exciting destination for shoppers.

The Clydesdale Bank building is being taken down as the first part of the project, which should be completed by the start of 2010. There will be accommodations for 40 new sellers and more than one million square feet of retail and leisure area when the project is complete. Additionally, the area will see a dramatic new entrance hall at the corner of Argyle and Buchanan and major improvements in the nearby St. Enoch square itself, as well as an extensive modification of the internal area of the complex.

The Clyde Waterfront Association reports that Steven Purcell, Leader of the Glasgow City Council, started the construction wave by welcoming Cambridge's senior VP for Europe, Claude Dion, and VP of Development in Europe, Cecil Huey.

Purcell commented that Glasgow has changed dramatically over the last 18 years, thanks in part to the benefits brought by the St Enoch Centre.

"I'm delighted that this new investment will further secure Glasgow's unprecedented regeneration as we look to a bold vision for the Clydeside adjacent to St. Enoch Square," Purcell continued.

"The corridor from the top of Buchanan Street, down to the river, is now seen as Scotland's prime retail destination and this investment maintains that reputation." Agreeing with the sentiment is Susan Nicol, the General Manager of St. Enoch Centre, who has stated that "In fact, it's very appropriate that this rejuvenation of the Centre in the 21st century is taking place at a time when great progress is being made in the regeneration of Glasgow, particularly in relation to the waterfront. The importance of the project extends well beyond St. Enoch Centre complex by itself, but for all of the other retailers in Glasgow and the city's economy as a whole."

The St. Enoch reconstruction is, in fact, only one of many projects currently occurring along the front of the River Clyde. As part of the rebirth, a new Medius building, equipped with all of the latest technology, will be offering office space to tech developers, and to offset the new with the old, the Clydebanks's 100-year old crane will be refurbished to serve as an attraction. The commercial property industry of Glasgow has, as shown by the new developments, grown at an extraordinary rate.
