David Faulkner Whenever some kind of controversial issue arises in the news, it is almost inevitable that people will soon be hearing terms such as political curtains or political smokescreens, particularly if the controversial issue involves top officials of the government. You might wonder, what exactly are political curtains anyway? Political curtains - simply called 'curtains' these days - are merely the means that the government officials employ to conceal true events, or portions of events, from the American public. Some citizens might be upset to learn that the government uses curtains to deprive the public of certain information, but this practice has actually been going on for years and years. In fact, it seems as if they go hand in hand -- wherever there is a government, curtains are probably being used in some form or another. For example, in the United States alone, curtains have been used on so many occasions, including the Iran-Contra Affair, the Lewinsky sex scandal with President Clinton, the Savings and Loan controversy, the somewhat low-profile Exxon Valdez cleanup bill, and of course, let us not forget - the Watergate Scandal. Curtains are also widely used in times of war. During these situations, several politicians still believe that there are certain kinds of information or ideas that are best withheld from the public, for their own benefit. Although this line of thinking has its positive points, curtains are still a very sensitive topic, and their use has to be executed with great care and prudence. Governments who use curtains have to be extremely strict on the politicians implementing them, as the power involved in the control of information has been abused so many times in the past. Some politicians have been known to overstep the boundaries of curtains, to the point that the public is deprived of information that they surely have the right to know. Curtains in this case are like a minor form of martial law, where people are denied their rights. When used properly and conscientiously, curtains can be a helpful instrument in maintaining the orderly governance of a nation. That is why politicians have to be very discriminating in using curtains. On several occasions, curtains have been used to conceal under-the-table negotiations or illegal deals from the eyes of the American people. Curtains have also been put into action to protect corrupt government officials from the embarrassment of public derision. This is why it is very important that politicians keep a vigilant watch on each other to ensure that curtains are really being used for the good of the general public, and not for any other purpose.
