Home Insurance - Stuff you want to check!

When you are looking around at home insurance policies, there are things you might overlook.

For example, many policies will pay out for fire, lightning, explosions and earthquake, for riots storms or floods.

But they won't pay out for losses or damage by a paying guest or tenant, or if your house has been left unoccupied for a specified length of time.

For example, Direct Line Home Insurance will let your house be unoccupied for up to 60 days before the policies start to drop away, but other insurance companies policies may vary.

Frozen foods can be a real problem if the electricity cuts out whilst you're away. The policy will be a good one if you can have the costs of replacing the food covered subject of course to the policy excess which can be a significant factor.

If you suffer losses around Christmas or around the time of a wedding, you may be able to get additional cover - eg Direct Line Home Insurance have special policy provisions for this such that the sum insured is £5000 greater, or 10% whichever is greater.

As we have discussed in other articles, you will be subject to limits when claiming certain items. There are often cash limits which are less than for actual products and those for credit cards and for singular items such as valuables. You need to check your home insurance policy to find out what your limits are!

Don't settle for a lousy policy, go for one that has the bells and whistles. What is more, you can always buy online and get a great discount. They won't have to employ anyone to answer the phone or talk through your mother's maiden name or secret password!
