For many young drivers, the feeling you get when you pass your driving test can be a memory to treasure.

After months of nervously taking lessons, with many stalls and emergency stops along the way, many young drivers will no doubt experience a sense of elation upon passing their test after all that hard work.

Indeed, owning their first car can be a major step in the right direction for a young person. Finding affordable car insurance on the other hand can be a frustrating and expensive process.

As a new driver you are most likely to be, literally, taken for a ride by insurance companies because of the risk factor, and there are some that don’t offer policies to drivers under the age of 21.

Whilst you may be a confident driver yourself, you’re unfortunate to belong in a group which have a high accident rate.

There are many factors, such as age and driving experience, which can contribute to the cost of your car insurance premium. Young drivers can give themselves a good start into the world of insurance by taking a few precautions when it comes to aspects such as:

Choice of car – whilst it might not be the hotrod they expected, starting off in a vehicle with a smaller engine size could help convince insurance companies that they are indeed less of a risk.

Parking – it may sound silly, but where you leave your car at night can make a difference in your car insurance quote. If the vehicle is left in a secure garage overnight rather than out on a town road this could reduce the risk of damage or theft – therefore leading to cheaper premiums.

Further training - many young drivers opt to take a PassPlus course in order to try and reduce their premiums when starting out driving.

The PassPlus course is designed to teach young drivers more advanced driving techniques that might not have been covered in their lessons – such as driving in a variety of weather conditions, at night and on motorways.

However, simply taking the time to compare car insurance can help to save you money. Whilst it might be tempting to rush into the first policy that comes along, it may not necessarily be the cheapest one for you.

So, with a bit of research, awareness and vehicle care, young drivers can help themselves reduce their risk of an accident, as well as a lengthy (and expensive) insurance claim.
