Hot tempers need cool air!
Isla Campbell Summer in the city; we all want it to mean sunny days, long evenings, tans and cold beers. We complain when it fails to materialize but, when it does happen, the rising temperatures don't suit us as much we'd like to think!
Those of us from cooler climates often convince ourselves that hot weather equates to great moods and smiles all round, but soaring temperatures involve having to deal with something we rarely experience: constant heat!
Heat, pleasant as it might be, also brings some unexpected complications. Offices tend to get that bit stuffier and employee patience levels tend to dip in equal measure to the temperature increases!
Sun worshippers are like the rest of us, they want the end result without the complications, i.e. the tan without the perspiration! We don't like to perspire and nothing aggravates us like damp armpits! The tendency to snap at others is regularly associated with wiping sweat from your brow. A growing impatience with the world that did not seem to exist during winter rears its ugly head. Suddenly, your friend's mildly irritating habit becomes an unbearable problem that only screaming can fix!
These are all familiar symptoms of life in enclosed spaces during hot weather; be it offices, homes, bars, you name it. Why can't we all just get along?
Because the air conditioning could be a lot better, that's why! Sun is best in small doses and prolonged heat does not agree with us. Heat is pleasant and relaxing when you have nothing to do but lie in it and gaze at the rays of the hot summer sun! St. Tropez millionaires might love it, but those wearing a suit or a uniform feel a growing burden instead of a pleasant embrace, while a crowded bus on a hot day is a lot different than a crowded beach!
Great air conditioning provides much needed relief and allows humans and heat to coexist peacefully. Personal pressure points are squeezed a little harder in the heat and humidity, but air conditioning is the cure. Many relationships have been saved by the couple who wisely invested a few extra quid on the air conditioning system!
Stepping out into baking heat from an air conditioned building isn't fun so we need it everywhere these days! The rise in popularity of portable air conditioners is pretty logical as they result in, not only cooler air, but help promote rational thinking and sensible decision making. They can't fix everything of course, some of the most ill judged clothing imaginable finds its way into our wardrobe as warm weather appears to strip us of any rational fashion sensibilities!
But when it comes to comfort, calm, balance and pressure release, they are priceless! About the Author
