With petrol prices rising faster than ever and a government that seems intent on punishing the car owner to the point of near-poverty we have had to make a vital decision: suffer or adapt.  Suffering obviously means paying more and more on petrol and road tax but it could also mean having to suffer sitting in traffic jams with no air conditioning too.

The other option, adapting, would mean doing what the government has been drumming into our skulls for the past few years; taking public transport.  It is now cheaper to take the risk of unreliable and delay-plagued public transport as opposed to having even the smallest, economic run around.

Many people take advantage of public transport such as rail services and bus routes to go to work everyday in other countries, going as far as New York where a massive portion of the working masses do not own a car themselves, instead taking the subways and taxis to get to work.

This increase in public transport doesn’t just save you money on fuel and tax though, it has emerged that by cutting down on your usage, specifically your mileage you could end up inadvertently saving money on car insurance!  car insurance policies are measured up by weighing up the risk that the driver and the vehicle pose; this is calculated by a number of factors from the make of car to the number of points on your license.

One of these factors is the annual mileage though, which means that if you stop using your car for work then there’s a good chance that your insurance premium will decrease, there are also fields in insurance applications that relate to how you use your vehicle, by using a car for work implies that you will be using the car typically five days a week and so there’s more chance of an accident.

By having a lower usage your insurers are less likely to believe you are a high risk driver, insurance premiums have recently changed how they are judged too and so in order to help keep your quotes down you should look in to how you can help keep your car insurance premiums down.  The rising cost of fuel alone has got many taking public transport so maybe you should trade those car keys in for a bus pass after all?
