How much and how often that has to be done can be determined by such factors as whether or not you have a pool cover or how bushy your landscaping in in your backyard. If you are going to go this route, then consider trimming back your bushes in your yard and getting a catcher for your lawn mower that catches all of the lawn clippings. Your pools filter is designed to keep the pools water free of all the finer debris that finds its way into your pool. If you buy an above ground pool filter that isn't adequate for your pools needs then the result will be that your pools filter will be getting clogged up. This will in turn tend to over work your water pump.
