How to Choose the Best King Size Mattress?

Jenny Watson

With various different names to indicate the differences in size, choosing between the many king size beds and mattresses on the market today is often considered by some to be a rather daunting task. Although, by simply learning of the different types first, and what you should be looking for before even shopping for a new mattress, you will be better able to make sense of the myriad of choices of king sized mattresses available.

Choosing the best king size mattress for you is first and foremost purely a matter of own preference, as everyone's comfort level and needs are different. Always consider your own individual needs in terms of both space and support, regardless if one brand is recommended over another.

If length is of more concern as opposed to width, the Western, or California king size mattress would be the best choice as they are ideal for people who are over six feet tall. But, if width is more important than the actual length of the mattress, opt for the Standard, or Eastern king size mattress that is four inches wider than the former, but also four inches shorter.

Remember that partners should always shop for mattresses together, especially when it comes to the king size variety where there are a few different types to choose from. Also, when shopping in a mattress store, be sure to lie down on the mattresses you are considering to see if it feels good to you, whether or not it provides the type of support you are searching for, as well as enough space for the two of you to sleep comfortably. If you are looking for cheap king size beds, you may try searching in online mattress stores or auction sites like ebay.

Types of King Size Mattresses on the Market

Air Mattress

Today, air mattresses include a wide variety of unique types, including the portable and easy to store air mattress, as well as the more complicated models that feature pockets of air within the mattresses' chambers in place of the usual mattress foams.

Futon Mattress

Mattresses for futons are, in general, relatively thin, unless they are purchased separately, where you can then decide on the thickness and type of materials they are most comfortable with.

Latex Mattress

Latex mattresses are a well-known choice although they are slightly more costly than their traditional counterparts. Latex conforms to the body, making it possible to ease pressure on the back, neck and legs, and is also a material that is ideal for allergy sufferers as it is hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites.

Memory Foam Mattress

Memory foam mattresses use a technology known as visco-elastic foam that has the capability to retain its shape over time while providing continuous comfort by alleviating pressure. The materials used to create memory foam king size mattresses are also heat sensitive, allowing the whole body to better regulate its temperature while molding to its exact, precise shape.

What is the Size of a King Size Mattress?

The measurement of a king size mattress is as follows:

North American Sizes

- Standard/Eastern King Mattress: 76" wide x 80" long

- Western/California King Mattress: 72" wide x 84" long

European Sizes

- King Mattress: 150 cm wide x 200 cm long (60" x 79")

- Super King Mattress: 180 cm wide x 200 cm long (71" x 79")
