A Skimmer and Biological Waterfall Filter Are Mandatory Tools for a Liner Pond

Gerry Fung

Too often, many pond owners come back to me with many problems related to poor water circulation and filtration. To properly construct a complete and self-sustaining backyard eco-system, you need to invest in the right tools to ensure that your water is both turned over and filtered adequately. Water circulation is crucial for any backyard pond if you want to properly oxygenate the water for aquatic life. Adequate water circulation also prevents pesky mosquito swarms from hatching. For pond sizes greater than 1,000 gallons, it is recommended that you adopt a skimmer and Biofalls filtration system to handle the larger volume of water.

Pond skimmers are readily available from many garden centers and online stores. Like a pool skimmer, they help to house the pump, and filter floating debris (such as leaves and twigs) from the top of the pond. Skimmers usually have an internal compartment with a basket that is easily removable for periodic cleaning. Many also have filtration mats, which can help out with mechanical filtration of finer particles.

When buying a skimmer, ensure that it is sized properly to fit both your pump, and handle your pond volume. It's always better to oversize the skimmer, then to undersize it and realize that it doesn't suit your needs. Algreen's pond skimmers, for example, are built to handle ponds with up to 5,000 gallons and sufficient space in the pump compartment to house any size of pump. Their skimmers are manufactured from a high molecular weight Polyethylene, with is engineered to withstand extreme temperatures, and are backed by a lifetime warranty.

Above: Algreen's pond skimmers can handle up pond volumes up to 5,000 gallons, have sufficient space to house any size of pump, and include a lifetime warranty.

The water from the skimmer must be reintroduced into the pond in a visually-appealing manner. Many pond owners choose to do so through a waterfall. Biological waterfalls are the device of choice for many owners because not only do they have a built-in waterfall spillway, but they also help to filter the water before it is re-circulated back into the pond.

Algreen's Biological waterfall filter is an extremely cost effective solution because not only does it come with a lifetime warranty, but it also include more levels of filtration (5) than any other commercially-available biofalls filter:

- Mechanical filters to remove fine debris and particles from the water. - Biological filtration to house beneficial bacteria, which remove toxic ammonia from the water. - Two bateria colony pouches to promote the reproduction of healthy bateria within the biological filters. - Two activated charcoal pouches, to remove the cloudiness from your pond water. - A Mat filter for mechanical filtration, and to smooth out the waterfall flow.

Before you start building your pond, ensure that you have all the adequate tools to build a self-sustaining pond. It's much less expensive to incorporate the proper system into the design than to have to redesign your entire pond all over again, after the fact.
