Questions about Tulips

Cheryl Hanlon

A lot of beginning gardeners have a lot of questions when it comes to the types of flowers that are used in a starter garden. Often you will hear that the tulip is a good starting point, but why is this? You'll find that the following will answer some of the questions that you may have about the flower.

First, you will want to keep in mind that the tulip is found naturally around Turkey. You'll find that the cold winters in Turkey help prepare the bulbs for spring, but also encourage them to grow throughout the warmer times. It is very important that you have full sun and good drainage when it comes to planting tulips.

You'll also find that it is very important that you plant in the fall, so that the winter can harden the bulbs and they are able to bloom in spring. It is very important that you plant later on the in the year so that they can chill.

When it comes to lifting up your tulips, you'll find that it is very important that you do so. You'll find that every now and then you'll be a few bulbs that come back every year, but they don't all. Instead of allowing your plants to die off over the years, you may want to lift them.

Often you don't have to, but unless you have good drainage in your soil, it's in your best interest that you do lift the bulbs up. Keep in mind that the tulips will buddy-reproduce and you should be able to get one or two new bulbs for every two original bulbs that you plant.

As for how you should plant tulips, keep in mind that these plants are going to need some room. If you are wondering how much room is needed, then you may want to consider having at least eight to ten inches apart. You'll want to also consider planting these flowers four times as deep as the bulb is big. This way you are able to give the bulb plenty of room and deep nutrients to grow.

For those who question pest problems, keep in mind that slugs like tulips. They will end up damaging your tulip garden, because most of then live underground. You'll also find that the tulip bulb will begin to become damaged and the plant will die. You'll need to make sure that you fight back against slugs if you commonly see them in the topsoil or while you are planting your bulbs

Something that a lot of people consider is purchasing tulips every year, but the thing is that you don't have to purchase new if you learn how to properly take care of your garden, however, tulips are nice to have and they can become your main flower. If you are concerned about your garden depleting every year you may want to express some of your concerns to your local greenhouse. .
