Beginners Guides to Caring Bonsai Plants Janet S. Brown More and more people are getting drawn to the finely cultivated beauty of bonsai plants. Some may think that they are half-starved mini plants but they are actually carefully cared-for works of art. When caring for your bonsai plants, you should take note of some important tips. * Know Your Plant and Environment Almost of all kinds of trees can be made into a bonsai plant, and the way you grow and care your bonsai plant is largely dependent on the species of tree it is made from. Tropical trees, for example, do not fare quite as well in cold temperatures and may require special care. It follows that your life will be a lot easier if you only pick up trees that will fare well in the specific environmental condition in your locality. Although they are mini-plants, their need to adjust to climate change is just like the regular-sized trees. In case you picked a special tree species, make sure you understand its specific caring needs. * Properly Water Your Bonsai Dependent on its species, the soil type and the season, bonsai plants may have different watering needs. You will need to develop a watering plan just for your bonsai. It is a general rule that you should neither over-water nor under-water your bonsai plants. Use your fingers and nails to give the soil a feel. If the soil is moist, the water is sufficient; but if the soil is dry, you will need to water your plant right away. Most bonsai owners water their plance every day in summer but only do so every other day in winter. This does not apply to all bonsai plants. If your bonsai is made from a very special species or if the soil condition in your area is a bit unusal, you must have a different watering plan for your plant. * Grow Outside for Sunlight If you live in cold regions and you have a tropical bonsai, you may have to devise some semi-indoor protection for your bonsai plant. However, generally, bonsai should be grown outside. Despite their appearance, they are not ornamental indoor house fixtures. Bonsai plants need sufficient sunlight. Otherwise they will get sick and may even die. If you have a bonsai plant that is native to your place, then it may do well outside in the winter season. Just remember to provide protection for it in especially harsh days. The above are just some bonsai caring tips for beginners. If you are enthusiastic about growing bonsai plants, you may feel the need for more in-depth knowledge, such as pruning, wiring, re-potting, etc. About the Author Whether you are a beginner or a veteran bonsai grower, make sure you visit our online bonsai guide for valuable resources about caring bonsai plants.
