Medical payments coverage (MedPay) pays for you and your passengers'' medical expenses after an accident. These expenses can be from driving your car, someone else's car or from being a pedestrian. The coverage pays whether or not you are at fault, but if someone else is liable, your insurer could choose to recoup the expenses from the person at fault.

Personal injury protection, also known as PIP, and no-fault coverage are expansions of medical payment protections that may be required by your state. In some states, PIP and no-fault are optional. There are often expanded features that cover lost wages and child care.

If you have a good health insurance plan, you might not need to have more than the minimum amount of PIP or MedPay coverage. If you already have disability insurance, you don't need to buy a large PIP coverage. There is no need to pay for two policies that do the same thing.
