Wholesale Trade / Wholesale Inventories? Source: The Census Bureau of the Department of
Commerce. Sales and inventory statistics from the second stage of the manufacturing process consist of the Wholesale trade index. The sales figures rarely move the market, saying close to nothing about personal consumption. Wholesale inventories sometimes bounce enough to change the
total inventory profile (total inventory is the sum of inventory at the
manufacturing, wholesale, and retail levels), which affects the GDP
outlook. In the unexpected event they can sometimes elicit a small
market reaction. Generally, however, this index goes ignored except
by market analysts.
