Retail Sales? Source: The Census Bureau of the Department of
Commerce. The retail sales report is an indication of the total account books of retail stores. The changes in retail sales are widely followed as the most accurate reporter of broad consumer spending models. Retail sales are often viewed without autos, as auto sales can vary from month-to-month. It is also important to keep an eye on the gas and food sections, where changes in sales often come about because of price changes versus shifting consumer demand. Retail sales can be quite changeable and the advance reports
go under extensive revisions. Retail sales do not include service
spending, of which total consumption makes up over half. The total
personal consumption is not printed until personal income and consumption
reports are released, so generally two weeks after retail sales.
