Durable Goods Orders? Source: The Census Bureau of the Department of
Commerce. The Durable Goods Orders release defines the dollar volume of orders, shipments, and unfilled orders of durable goods, which are classified as goods, whose intended lifespan is three years or more. The Orders are not a perfect indicator, volatile and flexible, but they are considered a leading report on manufacturing activity, and the market often moves on this report. The breakdown of orders often solves these problems. Large increases in aircraft and defense orders can change the numbers on the report dramatically. Increases based solely on strength in one sector tend to be discounted, while the market is more interested in broadly-based increases in orders. Also some part in this report is the narrow category of
nondefense capital goods, which mirror the largest component of business
investment: GDP category producers' durable equipment (PDE). Shipments of
nondefense capital goods are a good absentee vote for PDE in the current
season, while nondefense capital goods orders provide a measurement of PDE
growth in the seasons ahead.
