These days there are all kinds of things that you can get a scholarship or a grant for. You no longer need to be the most academically gifted student in the class or the school to get one. Even businesses are getting into the fray by offering these grants and scholarships to student just embarking on their college career.

If you want  grant money and scholarships then all you have to do is look. If you look you will find thousands for you to choose from. You will have to work hard to find all of the possibilities since there are so many but your effort will be rewarded once the money starts coming in. Chances are that you are not going to get your whole education just handed to you from one easy place, you are going to have to get a little money from here and a little more from there, but in the end you can take a huge chunk out of your college expenses this way. And hey, if you are exceedingly lucky maybe you will get one of those scholarships worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, it does happen.

Choosing the scholarships to apply for is not hard, when in doubt apply. It is only logical that the more you apply for the more you are going to get right? And remember that just like when you are saving for anything, every dollar adds up. In the end all of those dollars are going to stand for a lot of tuition.

So where should you start? Start at home, or at least near it. Your local community probably has all kinds of scholarship and grant resources so tap into it. Talk to the counselors at your high school, they will be able to point you in the direction of some local grants and scholarships. You have a much higher chance of getting one of these because there will not be as many applicants.

Then start searching online. The internet has a wealth of information on scholarships and grants all over the country. Some will be regional and some national. Check into all of them to see which ones you might have a chance of scoring. You can look for scholarships free at FastWeb.com orBrokeScholar.com. There are many other free sites that list scholarships on the net and you should always go with the free sites, why pay for what you can get free? And at the Michigan State Library you can find out about all of the private grants and scholarships that will help you all the way through school, even past your first year. Students do still need financial aid after their first year of college you know!

If you are not a big fan of the Internet then go with some great manuals that are put out each year. Some of the books that will help you to find grants and scholarships to apply for are the College Board's "Scholarship Handbook," or "The Scholarship Book". If you don’t want to put out the money to buy it just check at your school or the library in your city or town. You will probably be able to find it at either place. Just make sure that you have a pen and paper handy because you will be doing a lot of writing.

There are even scholarship management services that are set up to help student find the grants and scholarships that they are eligible for. Some of these groups work with scholarship organizations in order to find the candidates that are suitable for the awards. You can look for groups such as Scholarship America or the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. These can be a great help to students looking for aid.

Remember that you need to do all of these things to get the scholarships and the grants. This is important because not all of them will be listed online, many of the smaller ones are not published all over yonder and these are the ones that you want to go for because these are the ones that the lazy students did not take the time to find. This means less competition and we could all do with a little less competition.

You are going to run into all kinds of different restriction in your search for grants and scholarships so resign yourself to that now. You will not be eligible for all of the grants and scholarships that are out there but to make the most of your chances take stock of your life, where you have been and where it is that you are going. What are your life goals? What kind of career do you want to have? You will find some scholarships and grants for minorities and some for women and even some for people who belong to, or whose family belongs to certain clubs or organizations. Look at everything in order to find places where you might be able to get a scholarship or a grant.

Once you know the grants and scholarships that you want to apply for you then need to write down all of their due dates in order to assure that you don’t miss any. If you miss them then you can’t get the aid so make sure you don’t! And if it is a need based scholarship that you will be looking for then you need to have already filled out your FAFSA, get this done as soon as you can.

If some of the scholarships need you write essays then you need to know just how to do this. You should get books like Gen and Kelly Tanabe's "Get Free Cash for College: Secrets to Winning Scholarships" or Ben Kaplan's "Scholarship Scouting Report" as they can be a wonderful help to any essay writer.

Getting the acceptance letter is not the end of all your work. You still have to go over it and make sure that you understand it to perfection. Some of these scholarships and grants can have some pretty harsh restrictions so you need to know what these are or you could end up losing your scholarship completely.
