There are currently 43 different
states that are giving aid on a purely need basis. This means that even if
your child does not have the greatest grades in the school he or she will
still be able to get the financial aid they need to go to college. 37
percent of the financial aid available all together is given only
according to need. There are 27 states that have some aid programs that
are only awarded according to merit and only 18 percent of all aid is
reserved for this type of aid and a decent 25 percent is determined by
both need and merit. This gives a pretty good balance to the scheme of
things. You will be able to find many state
aid programs no matter what type of school your child is thinking about
attending, private or public. Although the majority of the state financial
aid for college does go to state public colleges. And some aid is given to
the colleges to dispense while other aid is still received directly from
the government. What you need to do when you are looking into
financial aid is look at all of your options, there are many. First off
you need to know that if you want to save money
your best bet is
to go with a college in state that is also public. These schools are
thousands of dollars cheaper in their tuition and not any worse when it
comes to the actual classes. You will still get the same quality of
teaching it will simply cost you less to do it. But what does in state mean? Well,
the answer to this very good question is: it depends on the state. Each
state has their own rules and regulations when it comes to this. Sometime
you have to have lived in that state for a certain amount of time and
other times you just need to have a drivers license. Find out about the
states and their requirements, you can find this all online. Then you need to look at tuition.
You don’t have to be a resident in a state all of the time to use the in
state benefit. In some cases you can actually pay just your home states
resident tuition even when your college is in a totally different state.
And if you are going to school out of state look into getting a tuition
waiver. This can save you even more money on your tuition and this
decision is up to the schools that you are attending. So you will have to
talk to them about getting your tuition waiver. Next you want to look at reciprocity
agreements, which can get you a deal on tuition as well. You can get this
lowered tuition rates from your college or the state, all depending on the
state and the college. You will still have to pay more than the in states
resident do for tuition but it is still less than you would be paying
without it. The following is a list of loans,
grants and some other college programs that can help you to pay for
college: Merit scholarships are something that only the best
of the best can usually get. If you excel academically and you have the
record to prove it then you want to go after these scholarships. In some
states anyone meeting certain grade averages are eligible for these
scholarships. These were created in order to help colleges keep students
in state and going to their schools.
Portable grants are called portable
because they can be used at a number of different colleges and
universities. Just which ones will depend on the grants
themselves. Conditional grants are grants that
are given with the expectation that you keep your grades up and behave in
a certain manner. You will not have to pay these loans back unless you
fail to hold up your end of the bargain. Private college grants are grants
that can be used at private colleges, these are generally need based
grants. Interest free loans are exactly
that: loans that do not accrue interest. These are great because unlike
most loans you will not have to pay back more money that you actually
borrowed. Higher education vouchers are an
alternative to subsidizing the tuition at some colleges. Instead of that
the money foes straight tot he student who can use it at any school they
choose. Special purpose programs are for
programs such as nursing and teaching. These jobs have trouble getting
enough workers and so the states have decided to help out by offering free
tuition or at least lower tuition to students as an incentive. There are
some other ways in which you can take part in these programs such as
having fought in a war or being married to someone who did and got
disabled. Now that you know some of the state
aid that is out there you need to go after it with a vengeance. If you wan
to apply for state financial aid to pay for school then you need to fill
out the FAFSA form. Get this form is right away or else you could miss the
boat on the financial aid. Most of it goes on a first come first serve
basis so there is no time to waste. If you have any savings plans in
place such as pre paid tuition plans or 529 savings plans then you need to
watch how you use them. You should use your pre paid tuition right away in
the first year. This way next year you might be ale to get more financial
aid from the state. With 529 plans however you should not use them. Wait
as long as you can because all of the time that money is still in that
account it is making money for you, tax free
money. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
